Safe handling of hazardous substances in the visual arts

Many materials in the visual arts – from solvents and pigments to resins and sprays – can be hazardous to health or dangerous.
In this lecture by Wilfried Vetter, students, graduates and employees of the Academy will receive a practical overview of the most important hazardous substances in the visual arts – from classic oil paints and printer inks to solvents and fixatives to casting resins and metal oxides. The focus is on concrete protective measures that can be implemented directly in one's own everyday work and studio: correct storage and labelling, suitable protective equipment, effective ventilation, responsible handling of waste and current occupational health and safety standards.
After the lecture, there will be room for questions, exchange of experiences and practical tips.
The lecture is aimed at all those who are active in the artistic field and would like to deepen their knowledge in the field of occupational safety. Previous knowledge is not required.
For 20 years, Wilfried Vetter has been working on material analysis in the field of art and cultural assets at the Academy. During this time, he was also able to gain a wide range of experience in the areas of production and exhibition of works of fine art.
