Dr Gesa Schwantes is a Conservator–Restorer specialising in the conservation of wall paintings, architectural surfaces and historic building materials. She has more than a decade of international experience in the conservation of murals and decorated architectural surfaces at historic sites in Germany, Switzerland and China. Her work includes the investigation and documentation of wall paintings and architectural polychromy, research on historic finishes, and the analysis and interpretation of historic materials and finishes in the context of traditional painting and plastering techniques.

She graduated in 2006 from the Bern University of Applied Sciences, specialising in the Conservation and Restoration of Architectural Surfaces and Interior Decoration. Following an MSc in Architectural Conservation at The University of Hong Kong, she founded the Architectural Conservation Laboratory (ACLab) in 2011 as a platform for conservation research and teaching. In 2017 she received a PhD from Tongji University in Shanghai, focusing on injection grouts for the conservation of earthen architecture. From 2020 to 2024 she was Associate Professor at the Shanghai University Institute for the Conservation of Cultural Heritage. Since 2024 she has been Assistant Professor at the Institute for Conservaiton and Restoration (IKR) at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna.
