A reading and shoe polishing workshop as part of the exhibition In the Fold of the Sack.

This workshop is an invitation to read through the materiality and gestures involved in the act of shoe polishing. At the surface of the shoe, the brushstrokes of the polisher become invisible. Shining registers a history of labor that stretches from public and domestic spaces, to the structure of the military. The elements that articulate the care for shoes serve as our entry points to written materials. A reading and shoe polishing workshop to collectively negotiate meaning.

Please, bring leather shoes you’d like to shine. Polishers, brushes and cloth will be provided.

Lucía Ugena is an artist based in Vienna. Through painting, written word and ready-made, she explores limits between representation and gesture. She works methodologically, trying to find moments in which the work displayed also participates, gathers or stages activities. She works individually and collectively and has a background in philosophy. Currently, she studies Fine Arts in the Studio for Art and Space I Spatial Strategies at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna.

Participation is limited to a maximum of 12 participants. Registration should be completed via luciap.ugena@gmail.com
