A film presentation by Anita Hafner as part of the series „Wer A… sagt“ of the University Library of the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna

How often in life does an artist get the chance to show their performance at a documenta? In Be a Part of Lost in Bass @ dOCUMENTA (13)! four different performers’ perspectives of one and the same moment are presented in all their complexity.

An invitation from the Critical Art Ensemble offered Anita Hafner the unique opportunity to show her artistic performance Lost in Bass @ dOCUMENTA (13) on July 23, 2012 as part of Winning Hearts and Minds at dOCUMENTA (13) in the north wing of Kassel’s main station. To capture this ephemeral event, she developed a contemporary setting based on VALIE EXPORT’s Adjungierte Dislokationen (1973), in which all four performers wore helmet cameras. The resulting experimental film is formally based on the film Timecode (2000) by Mike Figgis. Anita Hafner shows all four performers’ perspectives simultaneously in a split screen presentation, which is formal-aesthetically omnipresent in the Corona year 2020—including sound problems caused by camera microphones. The deliberately muffled sound frequency is modeled on the authentic hearing impression of one’s own voice.
As in a live performance, the audience of the film should have the opportunity to follow a certain performer, to switch between the performers’ perspectives, or to look at the big picture. Be a Part of Lost in Bass @ dOCUMENTA (13)!

Lost in Bass, founded by Anita Hafner (FreakA) and Michael Kozeluha (DJ Okim) in 1997, navigates in multiple contexts and flouts the unspoken rules dictated by (club) culture.
