Tricky Relations: Perspectives on Power Dynamics and Gender-Based Violence in Artistic Teaching and Learning Contexts
This event is part of the inter-university event series #MeToo Art: Gender-Based Violence and Power Dynamics at Art Universities, a collaboration between the University of Applied Arts Vienna, the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, and the mdw – University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna.
Teaching and learning contexts at art and music universities are characterized by specific instructional settings, hierarchies, and dependencies that can lead to an increased vulnerability to boundary violations and abuse of power. At the same time, such boundary violations—as in other social contexts—are often met with silence in the university environment.
This course examines the complex dynamics of gender-based violence and discrimination in the context of art universities. Building on the specific teaching and learning contexts at art and music universities, the focus is on diverse experiences, perspectives, and approaches regarding responsible conduct: What experiences of discrimination are encountered? What strategies have been tested in dealing with boundary violations and abuse of power? How can violence be prevented, and what institutional responsibilities do art and music universities bear?
Through a combination of artistic presentations and discussion, this evening will bring together key figures from the fields of higher education pedagogy and gender equality, students, and university administrators from various art and music colleges in the German-speaking world to engage in dialogue.
