The following position is being advertised at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna:

University professorship

in accordance with § 98 Austrian University Act 2002 (Universitätsgesetz 2002) for Architectural Design at the Institute for Art and Architecture (IKA). This full-time professorship is offered for a period of five years, starting on 1 October 2027. Before expiry of the fixed-term contract, an application for an extended or permanent contract can be submitted.

The architectural education at the IKA is based on an interacting structure of five platforms, each dedicated to a specific focus. These five platforms are: Analogue Digital Production (ADP), Structural Materials Technology (CMT), Ecology Sustainability Cultural Heritage (ESC), History Theory Criticism (HTC), Geography Landscapes Cities (GLC).

The open position is located within the platform Geography Landscapes Cities (GLC). The professorship includes obligations such as design studio, lectures and research, as well as administration.

Applicants are expected to represent the field of Geography Landscapes Cities in all its diversity. We are looking for a personality who has set international standards in the field of urbanism and architecture through their reflective, experimental design practice and who plays a significant role in shaping the discourse on urban, territorial, and global processes of formation and transformation, as well as the methods associated with them. These issues should be reflected upon in teaching and research within the context of the climate crisis, resource scarcity, and related social challenges, and tested as concrete fields of action at the interface between architecture and its environment.

Applicants should understand the platform as a design-oriented space for architectural education, where both the complexity of contemporary architecture and urban planning—including evolving fields of practice—and artistic and experimental skills are taught.

Conditions of employment

  • qualification as an architect with a corresponding Austrian or equivalent international university degree or proof of an equivalent academic qualification
  • proof of internationally recognized, highly qualified and discourse-shaping design, construction and/or research practice in the field of Geography Landscapes Cities through relevant publications or exhibitions
  • didactic aptitude as well as sufficient university teaching experience and practice in the field of Geography Landscapes Cities (including design supervision) in order to relate design and theory to the topics Geography Landscapes Cities
  • relevant international networking with similarly oriented research groups within and outside the academic field in order to relate all relevant fields of knowledge from technical to artistic practice
  • willingness to take on organizational tasks, both in academic self-administration (e.g. participation in committees) and in matters of study operations
  • excellent knowledge of English and/or German
  • general anti-discriminatory understanding and the willingness to further improve these skills

Desired qualifications

  • willingness to closely cooperate with colleagues at the IKA regarding content and organization
  • willingness to participate in internal and public activities as well as in interdisciplinary projects and cooperations

The teaching commitment includes at least 14 hours per week.

The monthly gross salary according to the collective bargaining agreement for university employees in salary group A1 for full-time employment is currently Euro 6.713,30.

Interested parties please apply by enclosing the following documents by 15 September 2026 via: www.akbild.ac.at/jobs: (1) cover letter, (2) detailed CV, (3) reference projects, (4) description of previous courses with exemplary student work, (5) description of focal points and direction of the GLC platform, (6) academic teaching concept on the motivation, contents and intentions of teaching as well as proof of teaching experience appropriate to the position, (7) statement on the applicant’s anti-discriminatory understanding of teaching, research and academic self-administration.

In case of long-term employment, the Academy expects the candidate to relocate to Vienna.
