Lecture as part of the lecture series Best Available Copy 4 - the preservation of time-based media art ... documentation as a copy at the Institute for Conservation-Restoration.

GABRIELLA GIANNACHI, University of Exeter

The lecture will start by recalling salient debates in the field of documentation in relation to works which are preserved in archives and collections, showing that documentation does not only have an ontological value but also epistemological and generative qualities. The case study is a work by the Bay Area artist Lynn Hershman Leeson, Roberta Breitmore, which is in itself formed by documentation that has been ‘propagated’ throughout the years. The lecture will look into what this propagation means for the artwork in question and whether AI might be an interesting way forward to keep track of the work’s iterations and to continue to build on them using new technologies and strategies.
