Barbara Kapusta | Artist
Barbara Kapusta works across various media, including video, installation, sound, and sculpture. However, the starting point of her work is always language and its exploration. Recurring themes in her practice include technology, ecological concerns, the vulnerability of bodies and communities, and the entanglement of history within our present.
Her works have been exhibited in numerous venues, including Die Welt von morgen wird eine weitere Gegenwart gewesen sein at mumok – Museum of Modern Art Ludwig Foundation Vienna (2025); Polyphony Is Us at Malta Biennale (2024); Fragiles at Klosterruine Berlin (2023); WORDS DON’T GO THERE at Kunstverein Braunschweig (2023); The Palace of Concrete Poetry at Writers’ House, Tbilisi (2022); Let your () do the talking at NAK Aachen (2022); Futures at Kunsthalle Bratislava (2022); Lo(l) – Embodied Language at Kunsthaus Hamburg (2022); Dissolving Matter & Value at Lothringer 13, Munich (2021); Europa Antike Zukunft at Halle für Kunst Steiermark, Graz (2021); Dangerous Bodies at Kunstraum London (2019); Hysterical Mining at Kunsthalle Wien (2019); and Empathic Creatures at Ashley Berlin (2018). In 2023, she was awarded the Media Art Prize of the City of Vienna and, in 2020, the Otto Mauer Prize.
Kapusta studied art and digital media at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna and sculpture at the Centro Nacional de las Artes in Mexico City. She lives and works in Vienna.
