In a workshop at the Media Lab, Friedemann Arbel-Derschmidt and Alaa Alkurdi will provide insights into their practical work with the Interrotron.

Have we forgotten how to look each other in the eyes lately because of our excessive use of telecommunication tools? Haven’t we literally been looking at each other with our eyes downcast ever since we started using Zoom, Teams, and similar programs? Is this a coincidence, or is there more to this seemingly inevitable, technology-driven quirk? What effects do such small changes have on our physical communication behavior itself?

A team from the Film and Television Research Lab has approached these questions in a very practical way through film as part of various art-based research projects*. In a workshop, we’ll provide insights into our concrete work with the Interotron. We’ll discuss the history of this invention by Errol Morris and try out this technology in practical exercises.

Come to the workshop and immerse yourself in the fascinating work at the media lab. Join us for a day in a specially prepared research lab environment.

Conditions of participation: Interest in media, working with video, and conducting research through artistic means

* art-based research, a qualitative research method that uses artistic practices to generate knowledge, collect data, and analyze experiences. We try to holistically understand human experiences and represent complex, often invisible phenomena. In this process, the act of creating art is part of the research project itself, and used to reach out to facilitate people to learn in a non-didactic manner.
