Demonstration against the Budget cuts on October 22, 2026

In order to raise awareness in collaboration with all universities and as many people as possible, a demonstration of all universities against the budget cuts will take place on Thursday, October 22.

  • The Student Council is calling on everyone to gather at Schillerplatz at 2:00 p.m. to march toward the Opera House and meet up with the group from the University of Applied Arts there.
  • At 3:00 p.m., all universities will meet in front of the Vienna University of Technology (main building on Karlsplatz). From there, the general demonstration will proceed to the University of Vienna.

We thank the ÖH for its commitment!

The more people from the universities who visibly come together, the clearer the message will be to those in political leadership!

We ask you to stand together against this challenging situation. Let’s take it to the streets!

The federal government has recently presented the budget for university funding for the years 2028–2030. Instead of the 17.5 to 18 billion euros calculated together with the ministry, which would be necessary to maintain current operations, only 15.9 billion euros have now been allocated. This amounts to an effective cut of at least 10 %.

It is a drastic reduction that will have impacts on every level. The Rectorate is working diligently to deal with this challenge together with colleagues and students. At the same time, we will protest against this policy of massive cuts and – together with the entire university community – fight against the dismantling of our universities.
