  • Photography of Activism, Exile, and Espionage: Gu Shuxing in 1930s–40s U.S.

    Lecture from Dr Yizhou Wang, Assistant Professor in Chinese Art and Culture at Hong Kong Chu Hai College, organized from the Institute for Art Theory and Cultural Studies, Univ.-Prof. Noit Banai. The lecture focuses on Gu Shuxing’s photographs of working-class Americans captured during her exiles in New York in the late 1930s and late 1940s.

    Die Aufnahme zeigt einen engen, rechteckigen Hausflur. Links und rechts verlaufen gelblich-braune Backsteinwände; dunkle Türen mit glänzenden Rahmen stehen seitlich. An der rechten Wand direkt unter der Decke hängen einfache Leuchtkästen, die ein kühles, gedämpftes Licht werfen. Der Boden reflektiert schwach. Im hinteren Drittel ist der Gang mit einer schwarzen ¾-hohen schwarzen Fläche blockiert. Davor liegt ein voluminös drapiertes, dunkelbraunes Tuch über einem Tisch. Darauf ruht ein braunes, gebogenes Objekt mit mehreren parallel verlaufenden Rippen. Es erinnert in der Form an eine Schale oder einen gefalteten Leder- bzw. Keramikkörper. Der Bereich um das Objekt ist deutlich dunkler als der Flur, wodurch es im Zentrum der Komposition betont wird. Insgesamt wirkt die Szene ruhig, leicht rätselhaft und zurückhaltend beleuchtet.
