The application deadline for Distinguished Visiting Austrian Chair Professor (short: Stanford Chair) has been extended until September 9, 2025.

  1. The Distinguished Visiting Austrian Chair Professor (short: Stanford Chair) will be in residence at Stanford for two quarters (6 months: January-June) of an academic year hosted by the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies (FSI) of Stanford University.
  2. Salaries are comparable to faculty at Stanford. For the periods January-June 2025, January-June 2026, January-June 2027 qualified Austrian scholars, i.e. scholars employed at Austrian universities, from relevant fields may apply. Duties include teaching one to two courses per quarter. Emphasis is on joint research and collaborative projects with Stanford faculty.
  3. The Chair is given a formal visiting professor appointment at both the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies (https://fsi.stanford.edu/) as well as at the Stanford academic department or school where they will be teaching.
  4. Qualifications include credentials to teach and conduct research at Associate Professor rank or above at Stanford.
  5. The Stanford Chair is open to Austrian faculty in all fields represented by Stanford University's seven schools, with special emphasis on the Social Sciences, Humanities, and Law.
  6. Applicants are expected to identify Stanford faculty with whom they can collaborate if applicants have collaborated or intend to do so. For additional information on FSI, see https://fsi.stanford.edu/.
  7. Applications in English should be sent by email not later than Monday, 26th of September 2022 (23.59 CEST) to international.office@univie.ac.at (University of Vienna, International Office) and include (in one pdf file):
    - a statement of research to be conducted at Stanford (maximum 5 pages)
    - a proposal for possible courses to be held at Stanford
    - a list of Stanford faculty with whom the applicant may collaborate.
    - a Curriculum Vitae
    - a list of publications
    A jury chaired by the Vice Rector for Research of the University of Vienna will select candidates for the Stanford University – Distinguished Visiting Austrian Chair. The jury includes representatives of the Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Research, and of the Federal Ministry for European and International Affairs, and persons selected by Universities Austria (Österreichische Universitätenkonferenz).
    Stanford University will review the applications of the selected candidates with its faculty and send letters of invitation to the most suitable candidates.
  8. Redress procedure: Applicants who have not been selected for international review or have not been shortlisted have the opportunity to appeal this decision. These appeals will be handled by a specially established Redress Committee.
