Before the mobility

Acceptance

The acceptance (Letter of Acceptance) is sent directly to the applicants via email. Please check your emails (including spam) regularly to avoid missing any important information. Also, open the attachments, one of which contains the Checklist before departure to keep track of essential details. The Letter of Acceptance also serves as documentation for visa application for entry into Austria (for non-EU citizens).

Visa

Apply for visa in a timely manner, as visa processing may take several weeks or months. Further information can be found at https://oead.at/de/nach-oesterreich/einreise-und-aufenthalt. Incoming students are responsible for applying for visa themselves.

Health and Accident Insurance

Exchange students must independently arrange sufficient health and accident insurance. All EU/EEA citizens have the same entitlements as Austrian insured individuals with the EHIC card (European Health Insurance Card), known as the E-Card in Austria. With the EHIC card (E-Card), you should receive free medical care for all necessary treatments during your stay. Check-ups and preventive examinations are excluded. It is strongly recommended to inquire with your own insurance about the details of insurance coverage when studying for a semester in Austria.

Self-insurance for students: Students who are not mandatory members of statutory health insurance and have their residence in Austria, as well as international students, can take out self-insurance with the Austrian Health Insurance Fund: https://www.gesundheitskasse.at/cdscontent/?contentid=10007.878901&portal=oegkportal

Students from non-EU/EEA countries, staying in Vienna in September or February (e.g., due to a German course), can apply for self-insurance only from October 1 or March 1, respectively. With this insurance, you will receive free medical care for all necessary treatments during your stay with any doctor in Austria. Check-ups and preventive examinations are excluded.

Learning Agreement

For some mobility programmes (such as Erasmus+), a Learning Agreement must be created. Please inquire at your International Office.
