University professorship
in accordance with § 99 Austrian University Act 2002 (Universitätsgesetz 2002) for “Gender and Space” at the Institute for Education in the Arts
The following position at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna is advertised:
University professorship
in accordance with § 99 Austrian University Act 2002 (Universitätsgesetz 2002) for “Gender and Space” at the Institute for Education in the Arts (IKL). This professorship is offered for 32 hours per week for a period of two years, starting on 1 October 2026.
At the Institute for Education in the Arts (IKL), contemporary artistic and creative activity in art, design, fashion and architecture are closely linked to theory-guided reflection, didactics, and mediation.
Studies at the IKL qualify graduates to teach in secondary level in Austria. The interdisciplinary orientation also enables graduates to pursue careers in art and cultural education, in artistic, creative and scientific research contexts as well as in curatorial practice.
The IKL offers two fields of study: “Art and Education” and “Design and Context” (from 1 October 2026: “Design and Education”) and the educational science-pedagogical subject area “Pedagogy, Arts and Culture” (from 1 October 2026: “General Fundamentals in Educational Science”). Art, architecture, design, fashion, technology, mediation, and didactics are developed intersectionally with a view to social transformation processes through climate crisis, migration, decolonization, queer feminism, and digitality.
The new professorship for “Gender and Space”, created in 2021, sets accents in the field of artistic and design practice, the theoretical examination of spaces and their appropriation, and the examination of politics of visibility in exhibition contexts through regularly changing appointments. The focus is on critical perspectives and aspects of gender and their connection to class relations, racism, heteronormativity, and disability.
The advertised position addresses individuals who, in their mediating, artistic, architectural, or urban practice and/or scientific research, have dealt with intersections in the fields of feminist spatial practices, critical urban practice, and/or feminist and queer feminist curatorial practices with a special focus on gender and space, and who have helped shape the international discourse on critical feminist and queer feminist spatial practice and architecture.
The courses of the advertised professorship are open to students of all fields of study offered at the Academy.
