In this workshop at the Studio Fashion and Styles, Institute for Education in the Arts, Njola offers insights into her transformative re- and upcycling practice.

From discarded materials found at landfills (old tires, bicycle tubes, plastic bags, packaging, flip-flops) the Ugandan artist Njola (Nabukenya Allen) creates new objects and fashion objects, giving them new meaning through the process of upcycling.

In this workshop at the Studio Fashion and Styles, Institute for Education in the Arts, Njola offers insights into her transformative re- and upcycling practice. Everything is made by hand, from large sewing needles to finished fashion objects. The needles will be crafted together in the metal workshop as part of the workshop itself.

Please bring (if available): old umbrellas, old bicycle tubes, old plastic packaging, plastic bags, bin liners, and other soft, thin plastic materials.

Allen Nabukenya, known by her artist name Njola, is a multidisciplinary contemporary artist from Uganda. Her work addresses issues such as environmental awareness, material transformation and collective responsibility. She is an artist in residence at PART International Art Residency Austria, in cooperation with Weltmuseum Wien (KHM-Museumsverband).

Njola's current exhibition Impressions. Kiteezi is on view at the Theseus Temple in the Volksgarten, Vienna, from 29 May to 11 October 2026.
