The following position at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna is advertised: 

University professorship 

in accordance with § 98 Austrian University Act 2002 (Universitätsgesetz 2002) at the Institute for Fine Arts in the field of „Art and Image | Figuration“. This full-time professorship is offered for a period of 5 years, starting on 14 September 2026. 

We are looking for an internationally distinguished artist with an outstanding position in the international art field, who has set standards through their artistic work and has knowledge of current art discourses and methods – especially in the field of (dis-) figuration. 

Conditions of employment 

  • a university or college degree appropriate to the position or equivalent artistic aptitude
  • internationally recognized work and artistic practice in the context of figurative painting / painting and figuration
  • outstanding artistic qualification in the field of painting with special consideration of debates on figuration/disfiguration in the sense of examining aspects of social reality, non-artistic pictorial forms or forms of artistic intervention
  • relevant portfolio (exhibitions, projects, publications, etc.) and submission of a concept on perspectives for the development of the arts in the field of "Art and Image | Figuration"
  • competence to lead and organize teaching within a department
  • competence to artistically support and promote students
  • submission of an academic teaching concept on the motivation, contents and intentions of artistic teaching as well as proof of teaching experience appropriate to the position
  • general anti-discriminatory understanding and the willingness to further improve these skills
  • submission of a statement on the applicant’s anti-discriminatory understanding of teaching, research and academic self-administration
  • willingness to closely cooperate with the professors and staff of the departments and workshops of the Institute for Fine Arts in terms of study contents and organization
  • willingness to participate in the committees of the University’s self-administration
  • willingness to engage in internal and public activities, interdisciplinary projects and cooperations
  • very good knowledge of German and/or English and the willingness to learn the other language
  • willingness to choose Vienna as place of residence

The teaching commitment includes at least individual artistic lessons of 17 hours per week in the central artistic subject „Art and Image | Figuration“ in the field of Fine Arts. 

The monthly gross salary according to the collective agreement for university employees in salary group A1 currently amounts to Euro 6.604,30.
