Joseph Neugebauer, a sought-after portrait painter of the high aristocracy in Old Austria and Bohemia, is one of the many artists who created their works in the shadow of the great history painters of the Viennese Biedermeier period. The Viennese took his first lessons from Sigmund von Perger and from 1831 he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna—then still located at the so-called St. Anna building—under Anton Petter, Johann Ender, Josef Redl and Leopold Kupelwieser. Study trips took him to Italy, Germany, France, and England. From 1839 Neugebauer was drawing teacher to the family of Archduke Karl. Neugebauer, also a composer in the field of church music, was a member of the Academy (from 1866) and the Künstlerhaus (from 1869) and created historical and altarpieces, portraits (including of members of the imperial family), still lifes, genre and flower pieces. He lived in Melk Abbey from 1884, where he also had his studio; the abbey holds his estate.

The author Corinne Gobbo dello Carrer takes us back to the world of the 19th century in an entertaining first-person novel based on the oeuvre of her great-grandfather Joseph Neugebauer. In her book, she lets her Venetian nonna have her say, telling the life story of the artist, who calls two muses his own, on a journey through time with her three Mascalzoni. The friendly, clean-shaven, bespectacled master is described by his friends, contemporaries and in some newspaper articles as modest, amiable, hard-working, and very fond of children.

Corinne Gobbo dello Carrer, born in Vienna, a convinced European, is one of the last representatives of the old Austro-Venetian cultural melange, which has almost disappeared today, who takes the reader into the spheres of music and painting of the Viennese Biedermeier period. Writing, both a task and a challenge, is not only a personal experience of identity for the author—an international banker in her day job—but also a source of identity. She lives in Vienna, London, Venice and Graz.
