The course “Typography and Layout I” offers an introduction to the fundamentals of graphic design and the use of type. Through hands-on exercises, students explore these basics step by step and develop a sensitivity for working with typography and layout. In addition, experimental typographic works will be created in the form of cyanotypes. Learning Objective The aim of the course is to convey the essential theoretical foundations of typography and composition in a concise and accessible way and to apply them in practical exercises. Students will become familiar with the key tools of visual communication and engage with both syntactic and semantic relationships between form and content. They will be able to distinguish typefaces according to their characteristics and usage, understand the principles of micro- and macrotypography, and prepare simple layouts for both analog and digital media. The course fosters a more conscious approach to type, which is of importance not only for the creation of communication materials but also for the students’ own artistic practice.

Recommended Prerequisites Knowledge of Adobe InDesign is advantageous but will also be provided in the course.
