Drawing on research and reference material, artists Rachal Bradley and Inka Meißner discuss their idea of the operation of indebted vision. A video work, produced for the event, gives an insight in their theory, that will be also discussed with regard to the exhibition Conditions and Frameworks: Infrastructure as Form and Medium.

Indebted Vision is also the title of their forthcoming book, in which Inka Meißner and Rachal Bradley theorize vision as a central agent. It is densely permeated by medialization and financialization, and functions as the backend of their most effective offspring: digitalized economies. From the legal system to communication platforms, its role is tightly woven within this infrastructure.

Rachal Bradley and Inka Meißner lay out this argument via an analysis of the use of the artistic methodology of appropriation, specifically elucidated in the Race Riot works from 1963–1964 by Andy Warhol and in Tanya as a Bandit, and OOZEWALD, both 1989 by Cady Noland.

The lecture is in English.

Inka Meißner is an artist living and working in Berlin. Her work manifests in different artistic and theoretical formats and collaborations. Current projects look at questions addressing artistic narration of manifest violence under the structural conditions of globalized and financialized capitalism.

Rachal Bradley is an artist and writer based in London. Her work explores the operations of infrastructure and the body through a strategy of the erotic. Investigating this intersection through her approach to the conundrums of material and form help her to reconsider how the body can find agency within social organisation. Most recently her work is concerned with the infrastructure of vision.
