Invitation to the Rigorosum of Jae Hyun Lim
The Institute for Art and Architecture at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna kindly invites you to the rigorosum of Jae Hyun Lim´s dissertation project "Present and Invisible: Interstice of the Unbuilt in Arata Isozaki’s Architecture".
The Examination Panel is made up of: Waltraud Indrist (chair), Angelika Schnell (first supervisor), and Ariela Katz (second appraiser, ENSA Paris-Malaquais).
Abstract
This research examines the work of Arata Isozaki (1931–2022), a prominent Japanese Postmodernist architect. It highlights his uncanny ability to use unbuilt architectural works as a medium for intellectual practice and explores the interplay of contrasting forms and ideas. The study situates his evolving discourse within Japanese cultural traditions and contemporary political contexts, tracing its transformation from postwar reconstruction and economic growth to the emergence of neoliberalism.
