Maruša Sagadin | Artist
The artist Maruša Sagadin, born in 1978 in Ljubljana/Slovenia, lives and works in Vienna. She studied architecture at TU Graz before transitioning to performative art and sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. From 2023 – 2024, she held a guest professorship at the Academy of Fine Arts Prague. From 2010 – 2016, she was a university assistant at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna in the studio of Professor Monica Bonvicini.
Sagadin’s work operates at the intersection of private and public space, challenging established codes for the perception of artworks. Her practice is rooted in an exploration of architectural history, questioning both inclusive and exclusive elements within built environments, as well as asking for whom public buildings are constructed. Through humorous strategies and exaggeration, she addresses visibility and subverts the surrounding societal discourse.
Maruša Sagadin has presented solo exhibitions at venues including Kunsthalle zu Kiel (Kiel/DE), Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt (Frankfurt/DE), Cukrarna Galerija (Ljubljana/SI), Christine König Galerie (Vienna/AT), and SPACE London (London/UK). She has participated in group exhibitions at Kunstverein Siegen (Siegen/DE), Belvedere 21 (Vienna/AT), MAK – Museum of Applied Arts (Vienna/AT), MAK Center LA – Mackey Apartments Garage Top (Los Angeles/US), Vestjyllands Kunstpavillon (Videbæk/DK), Syndicate (Cologne/DE), Kunsthalle Wien (Vienna/AT), Museum of Contemporary Art, Ljubljana (Ljubljana/SI), Grazer Kunstverein (Graz/AT), and Horse & Pony Fine Arts (Berlin/DE).
