Interview with Claudia Larcher
“You can counter the grand narratives by looking just a little bit off to the side.”
Claudia Larcher has been a professor of post-digital art at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna since early October. In her artistic practice, she combines photography, film, installation, and digital image production. She explores the materiality of the digital, artificial intelligence, archives, and the political conditions of technological systems. In this interview, she explains why “postdigital” does not mean the end of the digital for her, why errors and gaps in data systems are interesting, and why artists should not ignore AI.

Die Akademie trauert um Denys Zacharopoulos (1952–2026)
Mit tiefer Trauer haben wir erfahren, dass Denys Zacharopoulos am 3. Oktober 2026 viel zu früh im Alter von nur 74 Jahren verstorben ist. Prof. Denys Zacharopoulos hatte von 1991 bis 1996 das Institut für Gegenwartskunst an der Akademie der bildenden Künste Wien geleitet.

The Academy mourns the death of Boris Marte (1964–2026)
The Academy of Fine Arts Vienna announces with great sadness the passing of Boris Marte on October 4, 2026. Boris Marte was closely associated with the Academy for many years. He was a member of the University Council from 2008 to 2013 and was reappointed in 2018. In April 2021, he assumed the chairmanship, a position he held until the end of the term in 2023. During this time, he shaped the work of the University Council with great dedication, vision, and a particular commitment to art, culture, and social responsibility.

For the second time, the A⁴ – Austrian Art Alumni Award 2026 was presented to six outstanding graduates of Austrian art universities at a ceremony held on Monday, September 21, 2026, at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. Samira Fux was honored on behalf of the Academy; we extend our warmest congratulations!

Residency in Cairo: Marlene Coates shares her impressions
From April to May 2026 Marlene Coates spent two months in Cairo, Egypt, as an artist-in-residence. In collaboration with the Austrian Cultural Forum in Cairo (ACF), the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, and the Federal Ministry of Housing, Arts, Culture, Media, and Sports, the residency in Cairo was open to graduates of the Academy.

Marina Gržinić-Mauhler receives LExA Leadership Excellence Award in Research 2026
Marina Gržinić-Mauhler was a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna from 2003 to 2025. She was nominated in the "Experienced Leaders" category by her team, some of her former students. Gržinić-Mauhler was honored primarily due to her team's highly appreciative nomination and her compelling leadership approach, characterized by lived research rather than standardized management tools. Furthermore, the jury was impressed by her high integrity and intellectual excellence. She actively amplifies marginalized voices and serves as a positive role model, encouraging her team to make bold, socially relevant contributions to broader social discourse and interdisciplinary academic and artistic work. We thank Marina for her dedication and congratulate her most sincerely on this award!

The Academy mourns the death of IJsbrand Hummelen (1950–2026)
The Academy of Fine Arts Vienna announces with great regret that IJsbrand Hummelen passed away on September 14, 2026, after a short illness. Hummelen was a visiting professor at the Institute for Conservation and Restoration at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna from October 2022 to September 2023.

International Workshop on the Survey, Documentation, and Conservation Planning of Historic Vernacular Architecture
A Case Study of Wall Paintings and Architectural Finishes in Yuyuan Village. The Institute for Conservation–Restoration (IKR) at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna and the Department of Conservation at the China Academy of Art, Hangzhou, continued their international academic exchange in the framework of the Erasmus + Program International Credit Mobility through a two-week project focused on the conservation of architectural surfaces and wall paintings. Representing Vienna were teaching staff Dr. MSc. Gesa Schwantes and Mag. Maria Brand, together with student Natalie Ng.

Architecture holiday studio in Malawi
This Architecture Holiday Studio is part of the exchange activities between the School of Built Environment of the Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences and the Institute of Art and Architecture of the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna in the framework of the International Credit Mobility Project, Erasmus+. The Holiday Studio thengo la chikondi / garden of love took place from July 14 to 20 2026, at the school of built environment / MUBAS, in Blantyre, Malawi.
